At the August 1st, 2024, meeting, the TLN eContent Services Committee elected to reduce the maximum number of holds a patron can have at one time in Download Destination from 10 to 6. Overdrive enacted this change immediately. Here’s what this means for our patrons:
- Who is affected: all Download Destination patrons, including all LPL cardholders.
- What is happening: The maximum number of holds a patron may have at one time has been reduced from 10 to 6. Patrons are still allowed to have 6 checkouts at a time. Patrons who were already on hold for more than 6 items will NOT have their holds removed, but once they drop to 6 or fewer they will not be able to place more than 6.
- When did this happen: It was decided at the August 1st eContent Services Committee meeting and Overdrive implemented it immediately.
- Why did this happen: this decision is based on budget management. Selectors look at items with high holds and purchase additional copies to meet demand, so holds lead directly to purchases. We want our patrons to “spend” their holds on the items that they really and truly want to check out as soon as they become available. Patrons may also use Libby’s tags feature to create lists of books, for example “To Read” or “Good for Book Club” or whatever categories they’d like to create. Read more about using tags here: https://help.libbyapp.com/en-us/6254.htm.
- How can patrons adjust: As more partner libraries begin sharing access to their collections for Download Destination users, LPL patrons will find that they have access to the titles in those collections. We encourage you to add all of our partner libraries to your accounts. Read more about adding partner libraries here: https://help.libbyapp.com/en-us/6009.htm.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to adjust to the changing ebook landscape. While these digital materials are free to LPL card holders there is a real cost to libraries budgets. We do our best to balance our budgets to meet our communities increasing demand for this content.
