The selection for the 2024 One City, One Book event is
Of Time and Turtles: Mending the World, Shell by Shattered Shell by author, naturalist and National Book Award finalist Sy Montgomery. Of Time and Turtles recounts Sy Montgomery and wildlife artist Matt Patterson’s experiences volunteering with Turtle Rescue League, a two-person team devoted to caring for hundreds of sick and injured turtles. As volunteers, they took part in heart-pounding dramas and breathtaking miracles. Working with extraordinary humans and extraordinary turtles forever changed their lives in ways they never could have suspected.
Montgomery’s 34 books have garnered many honors, and the New York Times has referred to her as “One of the finest chroniclers of the natural world.” To research books, films and articles, Sy Montgomery has been chased by an angry silverback gorilla in Zaire and bitten by a vampire bat in Costa Rica, worked in a pit crawling with 18,000 snakes in Manitoba and handled a wild tarantula in French Guiana. We’re thrilled that Sy will be joining us for a
virtual author visit and Q&A on Monday, September 23.
One City, One Book targets adult readers; however, we’re seeking to attract Livonians of all ages in our 2024 programming which focuses on turtles, reptiles, Michigan ecosystems and conservation.
