2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the Michigan eLibrary Catalog (MeLCat), a service that has revolutionized resource-sharing for libraries across Michigan. MeLCat launched with just 12 participating libraries and has since expanded to over 435 Michigan libraries, offering access to more than 34 million items from public and academic libraries alike.
Livonia Public Library has been a proud participant in MeLCat since 2008. While a vast majority of our holds are filled through The Library Network, Livonia was able to fulfill over 4000 requests through MeLCat in 2024 alone. “MeLCat provides a great resource for libraries of all sizes, allowing us to offer even more materials to our community,” said Kristen Edson, Library Director.
MeLCat has filled more than 16 million requests since its inception. It allows libraries to lend and borrow materials quickly and efficiently, ensuring that patrons can access the resources they need, no matter where they live. This powerful tool is supported by the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services and the Library of Michigan.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, MeLCat is inviting Michiganders to share their own experiences with the service. For more information on how to use MeLCat, visit mel.org or contact your local branch today.
