Protecting Intellectual Freedom: The Impact of Recent Executive Orders on Libraries

The Livonia Public Library remains committed to providing access to information, supporting intellectual freedom, and fostering an informed community. Recent executive orders from the President have raised concerns within the library community, and we want to ensure our patrons understand the implications of these actions.

The Library Network (TLN), our area library cooperative, has released a statement outlining the impact of these executive orders on public libraries. This statement, shared on Monday, March 17, provides essential context and resources, including a link to the full executive order and a related statement from EveryLibrary. You can read TLN’s full statement here tln.org/news/696170 and access EveryLibrary’s statement here  everylibrary.org/statementimls2025.

Additionally, a joint statement has been issued by library and cultural associations from across the state of Michigan, reinforcing the importance of protecting intellectual freedom and ensuring continued access to information for all. This collective response highlights the widespread concern among professionals dedicated to education, literacy, and public knowledge. This joint statement can be found here ow.ly/HV4k50VkiI4.

EveryLibrary’s statement also offers actionable steps for those who wish to advocate for library funding and intellectual freedom. These resources include an email template to contact our governor and a petition urging Congress to take action. We encourage our patrons and community members to engage with these advocacy tools and share them within their networks.

Over the past several years, libraries nationwide have faced relentless attacks on our core mission: providing free and equitable access to information. These latest challenges underscore the importance of standing together to protect the right to read and access knowledge. A well-informed and educated public is a powerful force, and we must continue to defend intellectual freedom for all.

We urge our community to stay engaged, informed, and proactive in supporting libraries. If you have any questions or want to learn more about how you can help, please visit the Livonia Public Library or contact us directly.

A knowledgeable and educated public is a powerful force. Together, we can ensure that libraries remain pillars of knowledge, access, and intellectual freedom.
